Corporate Gift Giving - Things to Know

Jale Mills - Thursday, May 05, 2011

Many people feel challenged when faced with the task of selecting and purchasing a corporate gift. It can be hard to know what the person would like and of course, there is usually a budget to be considered. Add to this the concern of not wanting to give something the person already has or has no use for, and corporate gift buying can be incredibly confusing.

From corporate gift baskets to calendars, vouchers, office equipment and gadgetry, making the right choice of gift for any recipient is made all the easier by keeping a few essentials in mind…

  • Online shopping has really opened up the world of retail. You no longer need to feel constrained by what is in the shops in your vicinity – you can now consider products from international outlets and receive the goods quickly and with a minimal amount of fuss. In fact, you may feel overwhelmed by the range of choices and possibilities!
  • It is important to check corporate policies on gift buying. Some organisations have and enforce policies for gift giving which specify the amount of money that should be spent on gifts. These policies may also specify the types of gifts that can be purchased and given as well as those which are not deemed appropriate. Knowing any limitations before buying a gift will save time, energy and inconvenience (as well as possible embarrassment) in the long run.
  • Consider doing a little research before going out and ‘blindly’ making a purchase. This is particularly relevant if you do not know the person so well and many gift recipients appreciate a little background work being done in an effort to acknowledge them with a desired and appropriate gift.
  • Having said this, some gifts – such as a gourmet gift baskets – are highly appropriate even if you do not know the person on a personal level.
  • It may also be relevant for you to be aware of cultural differences and considerations for gift buying. In many countries and cultures there are particular rules and traditions related to the giving of gifts and it is important that these are adhered to.
  • An appropriate gift should always be a gift of good quality. Corporate gifts speak volumes about your company and you certainly do not want to gain a reputation as an organisation that is ‘cheap’ and disrespectful in the way that it acknowledges and shows appreciation for others. Of course, budget constraints usually exist, so try to choose something within your price range that shows respect, thoughtfulness and gratitude.
  • Few things make more of a positive impression than cards that are handwritten. Handwritten messages show that thought and care has gone into the words chosen and a personal approach has been taken.
  • When making a purchase, check that you are able to return the item if necessary.
  • Devote some of the budget and your time to wrapping or packaging the gift attractively. Doing so is a demonstration of the value your business places on the relationships that it has with clients and staff. You may think that you have no skill in wrapping presents, but keep in mind that many retailers will package and wrap the gift for you.

Corporate gift giving need not be a difficult or stressful task. Taking the aforementioned guidelines into account will help you to make a choice that is wise and appealing and present your client or staff member with a gift that is very much appreciated.
